Successful candidates will be part of a project team and will work in a laboratory to improve the properties of lead drug candidates through the design and synthesis of new chemical compounds and optimization of synthetic routes. They will use their strong laboratory skills to contribute to the discovery of drug candidates through the development and refinement of structure-activity relationships in a collaborative manner, working closely with their colleagues in Biology, Pharmacology and Drug Metabolism. They will also routinely communicate and present new ideas and research progress at project meetings. The result of this effort will be the identification of drug candidates for clinical development. Training and supervision of subordinate chemists is also a potential function of this position. This position is available at Merck research sites in Boston, MA, Kenilworth, NJ, or Rahway, NJ.

 

Qualifications - Chemistry Job

 Education Requirement:

 

- Ph. D in organic chemistry, bioorganic chemistry or pharmaceutical sciences

 

Required:

PhD with 0-6 years experience or will be graduating with PhD 2014

 

- Must have conducted outstanding research in his/her field of expertise that may be shared during the inteview process.

- Mastery of all techniques associated with drug discovery in a modern laboratory, including the synthesis, purification and characterization of chemical compounds on small and medium scale.

- Function well within multidisciplinary teams and possess outstanding communication skills.

- Strong problem solving and troubleshooting skills

- Strong technical skills, the successful applicant will need to exhibit strong leadership and interpersonal skills.

 

Preferred:

 

- Additional experience within an academic laboratory (post-doctoral fellowship) or the pharmaceutical/biotech industry is a plus.

- A strong track record of peer-reviewed publications and research presentations is a plus.
